Today is 8 Nov 2017.
Inviting you to join my search for the perfect Autumn spot in Japan. Our 1st stop is Fukuoka. I am always fascinated by Giant Buddha statue and enjoy visiting Buddhist monastery.
This giant statue is 41 meters in length and 11 meters tall (3 to 4 storey). If the statue of liberty is laid down, it would be 46 meters in length.
Accessible from KIDONANZOIMMAE STATION, a 22 min train ride from HAKATA STATION.
This temple is tranquil and is famous for punters luck. Walking through the beautiful temple ground is a delight. It is nice to wander around the vast temple ground.
The autumn colours have not arrive yet. Some trees are starting to change colours and I am sure it will be a mag ical delight for the eyes.
TOCHO-JI 南岳山 東長密寺(東長寺)
This 30 ton wooden image is 10.8 meters tall! (about 3 storeys)
just besides the giant Buddha is a small entrance. This lead to a gallery with depiction of hell. Followed by a tunnel in complete darkness where you need to feel your way around. The sense of lost is abso lo ute intotal darkness. Then as you persist in your spiritual journey, you begin to see a light at the end and it opens up to imagery of Buddha. Meaningful.
Beside this temple is a small shop selling crackers and souvenirs. Their matcha ice cream is intense!
Shofuku-Ji 聖福寺
This temple is just a short walk from Tocho-ji.
No Giant Buddha here but it is the first Zen temple constructed in Japan. I was crazy about Zen during my teenage years, so wouldn’t miss this. Plus it is free admission!
FOOD STORY
Ichiran Ramen
Eating ramen Zen style. Even if you come with friends, each one will be assigned a cubicle where you can eat your noodles without distraction. That is because the noodles are so delicious that they want you to taste in deep concentration. It is really good.
OTHERS
this seasonal sweet with chestnut is great. Remember to try their traditional cream custard too. You won’t regret adding the extra calories.
this ice cream bought from the convenience store, family mart is my favourite. Insides are balls of ice cream with an intense flavoured grape fillings in each ball. Just love it.
