May I be well and happy

This is about loving kindness meditation and it started off with May I be well and happy.

Objective is to tune our mind towards being loving and positive. Loving Kindness is one of the quality of Enlightenment, Furthermore, the vibes we resonate when we have loving kindness is good for ourselves and others around us.

Rumour has it that a great practitioner walking down the street will not cause animals to take fright and flee…. But of course we should not practice with the aim of becoming Snow white in a Walt Disney movie, attracting birds to flutter around you and chirp happily!

It’s not a sin to wish for happiness in Buddhism. It is this fundamental needs of Human kind that cause the pursuit of it by Prince Siddhartha, which resulted in Discovery of an Enlightened state that is possible and inherent in all beings.

So begin by sitting ourselves in a quiet place that gives you peacefulness in mind. As you advance in this meditation your surrounding will not matter. But for a start, find a nice quiet peaceful place.

Sit comfortably on a chair or on the floor in meditation posture.

Start by bringing in your consciousness and mind to your body and self. Then mentally wish May I be well and Happy.

This simple sentence embody many different things and differs in definition for different people. But fundamentally we just want to keep this to mean a simple state of happiness. A happy state of being. That’s all. Don’t let your mind start wondering what makes you happy, otherwise Confusion will seep in. Just a simple state of being happy in body and mind.

Next direct your mind outward and towards those whom you cherish strongly. Most people will think about their partner in life, family and maybe pets. The reason is because generating love to such object is easier. So you see, we are building our mind of love and kindness gradually. When you have a mental object of these people that you cherish, all smiling contentedly and happy. Mentally wish May you be well and Happy.

Then move on to close friends and relatives. Likewise, wish mentally May you be well and Happy.

Remember it is to wish them a simple state of being well and Happy.

Then move on to acquaintance and people you know but maybe not so close. That guy you always say “hi” ar work. The regular bus conductor. That distant relative. Etc. Likewise wish them well and happiness.

Then move on to stranger. People you know are there but couldn’t care less about. Likewise wish them well and happy.

Then move on to people whom irritates you. People whom you dislike.

If you have people whom you have strong hatred, leave them to the last. You need to mentally wish May you be well and Happy.

This ends the part one of the meditation. If we wish to stop the meditation we can do so. We should dedicate the merit derived from this session of generating loving kindness to all sentient beings.

This can be done by mentally saying.

I dedicate the merits produced by this meditation to all beings. May they be well and happy.

If you wish to continue to part 2. The same wishing May you be well and Happy apply.

This time. We wish all sentient beings in the front direction well and happy. We direct our mental loving kindness forward. Then we wish. Many all sentient beings in front of us, seen or unseen. MAY YOU BE WELL AND HAPPY.

Next we think of beings on our right. We direct our mental loving kindness right ward side. Then we wish. Many all sentient beings in front of us, seen or unseen. MAY YOU BE WELL AND HAPPY.

Then we think of beings behind us and we do the same life before.

Then we direct loving kindness towards our left and we do the same like before.

Thus all direction surrounding us. We project our mental loving kindness. Then we think of beings on top of us. Followed by beings below us. Thus like a sun radiating light in all directions, we radiate loving kindness in all directions.  May all beings be well and Happy.

Then we should conclude the meditation  by dedicating merits to all beings.

This can be done by mentally saying.

I dedicate the merits produced by this meditation to all beings. May they be well and happy.
