Day 6: Wu Han – Gude Temple

Embracing Ancient Virtues in Modern Times: A Visit to 古德寺 (GuDe Shi)

In a world that often feels fast-paced and increasingly impersonal, the ancient values of honesty, compassion, truthfulness, and integrity seem to be fading. This paradox is poignantly encapsulated in the name of this monastery, 古德寺 (GuDe Shi), which translates to “Monastery of Ancient Virtues.” Visiting this serene haven offers not just a spiritual retreat but a chance to reflect on these essential virtues that once guided many.

Architectural Wonders: A Fusion of Styles

Upon approaching GuDe Shi, one might be taken aback by its gothic-influenced architecture that resembles a church more than a traditional Buddhist temple. The intricate designs and towering spires usher in an unexpected yet captivating ambiance. However, stepping inside reveals a treasure trove of beautifully crafted Buddhist statues, seamlessly integrating Eastern spirituality with Western architectural flair.

This unique architectural blend serves as a visual reminder that ancient virtues can coexist with Western influences. The sights at GuDe Shi attract an energetic crowd, particularly young people eager to capture their European settings in selfies. It was heartening to see some youths taking a moment off from their selfies to offer a silent prayer within the tranquil halls of the temple.

A Desire for More Cultural Fusion

While my visit was undeniably enriching, I found myself yearning for an even deeper fusion of cultures within the temple’s design. For instance, incorporating elements such as Buddhist-themed stained glass windows or prayer benches could further enhance the serene atmosphere and offer visitors more opportunities for reflection. These additions could also serve as fascinating visual narratives that weave together different traditions.

The Digital Currency Dilemma

One can’t help but notice that in China, the embrace of electronic payments has transformed daily transactions, even in the realm of kindness. It’s a common sight to see beggars holding up QR codes, making it easier for generous souls to lend a helping hand.

Within the monastery, donations can be made via electronic transfer as well.

However, this reliance on digital transactions can be daunting for newcomers, as I discovered later when I was alighting from the cab.

In my eagerness to pay my cab fare quickly and not hold up the traffic behind, I struggled with multiple layers of authentication required by my digital wallet—scanning the cab driver’s QR code, entering the fare amount, and face recognition verification. In the midst of it all, I inadvertently dropped my phone while getting out. The realization that my entire digital identity—my national ID, bank accounts, social media presence, and contacts—was now just out of reach led to a whirlwind of frantic calls.

A Lesson in Focus

As I stood outside, clutching my coat against the biting winter wind, I found myself embroiled in an exhausting hour-long battle with customer service lines, desperately trying to freeze my accounts. In the midst of this chaos, an unexpected clarity emerged. My surroundings began to fade; the cold air became a distant memory as I centered my thoughts on safeguarding my vital information. Ironically, this moment felt reminiscent of Jhana—though in reality, Jhana is marked by peace and delight, not the frantic energy I was experiencing.

Reflecting on my state of mind, I realized that a tendency to assign blame had been hardwired into my thinking. One moment, I was questioning, “Why wasn’t I blessed after visiting a temple?” and the next, I was irrationally attributing fault to my partner for asking me to hold his belongings while we exited the cab. Thankfully, I had the presence of mind to recall the teachings of the Buddha. The unfortunate incident was a direct result of my own lack of mindfulness, and nothing else. Through this understanding, I managed to tame the negative thoughts and allow positive reflections to take their place.

Once the episode was behind us, we shifted our focus to finding a cozy restaurant for dinner and shopping!

This experience reinforced the vital skill of letting go, especially when faced with life’s challenges. The quicker we can release our burdens, the sooner we can move forward.

May all beings be well and happy.
