The Four Noble Truths: A Framework for Tackling Life’s Problems
The Buddhist Four Noble Truths offer a profound framework for addressing life’s challenges. This essay explores how these truths can be applied to overcome a personal concern, demonstrating their universal relevance.
The First Truth: Identifying the Problem
In the original 1st Noble Truth, Buddha proclaimed samsaric existence as a state of suffering or dissatisfaction and stress.
Similarly, we can use the same approach and identify our problem first.
Let’s look at the following example.
As a retired individual, I face the existential concern about securing a steady passive income to support a comfortable lifestyle. The fear of poverty and uncertainty, exacerbated by inflation and economic instability, creates mental stress and constant worry.
If we examine the above suffering /dissatisfaction /stress, it can be broken into 2 parts.
- The external part relates to financial health and wealth management.
- The internal part relates to stress and worry
The Second Truth: Understanding the Cause
In the original 2nd Noble Truth, Buddha identified the cause of suffering as craving and ignorance. Craving can be further elaborated to include desire and aversion.
Similarly, we can use this approach and identify the cause of our problem. Using the same example,
- The external part is caused by ignorance of wealth management and investment
- The internal part is caused by various mental thoughts. For example, imagining a worst-case scenario about the unknown future. The root cause of this stress lies in my desire for a comfortable life and aversion to a difficult one. It is based on the assumption that money equals happiness.
The Third Truth: Identifying the Goal
In the original version, Buddha proclaimed a state of non-suffering known as Nirvana. This is the goal of ending suffering /dissatisfaction /stress.
Similarly, we can use the same framework of the 4 noble truths to identify our goal in life. Using the same example.
- The end of the External problem is the creation of a source of passive income for retirement
- The end of the Internal problem is the cessation of constant worry and stress
The Fourth Truth: The way to fix the problem
In the original version of the Four Noble Truths, Buddha charted the methods for attaining the end of suffering, known to Buddhists as the Noble Eightfold Path.
Since the Noble Eightfold Path is a holistic approach to happiness, I will not break down the problem into 2 parts. Let’s examine how we can utilize it to resolve the problem in the same example.
Right Understanding –
- Understand that life is impermanent. There is no guarantee that one will live to a ripe old age. If I am to die before 65 years old, then all those worries about insufficient money for retirement become unnecessary
- Money is not the source of happiness. Buddha did not have any money but was the happiest.
- Worrying only creates stress. It doesn’t solve any problem. Therefore instead of imagining bad things about the future, it is better to do something more practical.
Right Thought
- Stop thinking about negative things
- Think about positive things to do, so that the problem or concern can be resolved.
- Think confidently that I will be capable of learning how to do wealth management and the creation of passive income
Right Speech,
- Stop negatively complaining about the future and being poor
- Humbly seek opinions and advice from trustworthy friends, consultants, and financial institutions about retirement and wealth management.
Right Action,
- Learn about wealth creation and wealth management
- Sign up for courses and read up about wealth planning
- Stop incurring debt and careless spending
- Learn to do charity and help others. One good deed begets another.
- Mix with good people
Right Livelihood
- Engage in proper methods and ways to accumulate funds, invest, and create passive income streams. Do not break the law.
- Do not create enemies in the process. Be fair, just, and honorable.
- Do not gamble
Right Effort
- Do not be lazy with the above plan and action.
- Must stop the mind from having the wrong Understanding and thoughts.
- Stop unfounded worrying
Right Mindfulness
- Be aware of how I spend my time each day. Is it efficient and fruitful?
- Be mindful of what I am thinking and doing. Is it contrary to the above plan?
- Be mindful of positive transformation along the way and rejoice at little achievements
Right Concentration.
- Practice some meditation to gain a peaceful mind
- Learn to focus when working. Don’t let worry cripple me.
The 4 Noble Truths offer a timeless framework for solving problems and challenges in life. It demonstrated the practicality of Buddhism and the wisdom of Buddha.
In conclusion, the Four Noble Truths can offer a powerful framework for tackling life’s problems. By applying these approaches to personal concern about securing a steady passive income, one has identified the problem, understood its causes, set a goal, and found a path to achieve it.
Through the Noble Eightfold Path, one learned to approach wealth management and stress reduction in a holistic and mindful way. One also comes to understand that true happiness and comfort come not from external sources like money, but from within. By following this framework, I am confident that many can overcome their concerns and achieve a more fulfilling and peaceful life.
May all be well and happy
