Movie review : Abang Adik

This movie depicts suffering very well and it managed to stab at my heart.

Set in Malaysia, it depicts the wretched life of 2 stateless brothers. Abang, the protagonist, grapples with deaf-muteness and, tragically, finds himself condemned to death in an unfortunate turn of events.

The finale of the movie cumulated to a heart-wrenching moment when Abang was receiving counseling from a Buddhist monk. (And they managed to invite Venerable KaiZhao to cameo in the movie!)

Abang had given up on living and refused food while on death row. Consequently, the prison warden arranged for Ven KaiZhao to counsel him. As expected of a Buddhist monk, he started his counseling by saying “Death is inevitable. Even I will die one day. But while alive, we just need to live one day at a time.”

That is when Abang finally unleashed his lifelong pent-up feelings and emotions. He lashed out at the monk with sign language and cries of torment. (That 15-second scene was overwhelmingly touching for many people)

While I cried for Abang’s cursed fate, I also recoiled at his rudeness.

“Don’t you dare preach to me about life!” It was a silent scream without words.

And the Venerable Kaizhao who was playing himself, simply sat there and let the prisoner vent his frustrations. It was a powerful scene and Ven. Kaizhao remained silent until Abang said he didn’t want to live anymore.

At that point, Venerable Kaizhao grabbed Abang’s gesticulating hands. As if to say No. And Abang broke down sobbing uncontrollably.

It must have never been an easy job for Ven. KaiZhao to share the Buddha’s wisdom with death row inmates. While I am used to a Buddhist environment where everyone shows due respect to monks, it is shocking to witness someone scolding or berating one. But I guess that is what happens in real life when you try to share Dharma with someone who isn’t ready to listen. I think it is compassion.

The movie has many messages and I think it deserves to be watched and discussed from a Buddhist perspective.

Abang is a character overwhelmed by fear while his brother Adik is a character overwhelmed by greed and aversion. These mental afflictions drive a person toward ignorance and suffering.

Hope you’ll have the chance to watch this great movie.
