Song: Ambapali

“Ambapali” by Bodhi-bowl is a hauntingly modern reclamation of radical self-acceptance, deeply rooted in Buddhist philosophy. The track draws its lineage from two profound sources: the Therigatha—specifically the poems of Ambapali, a beautiful courtesan turned enlightened nun who famously meditated on her own aging body—and the Tibetan Chöd ritual, which uses the imagery of cutting away the ego to sever worldly attachments.

While the lyrics echo ancient truths, they take aim squarely at the modern ‘beauty industrial complex’—the Botox, the filters, and the suffocating pressure to remain frozen in time. Through its driving rhythm and the soaring refrain of Anaññathā (“it cannot be otherwise”), “Ambapali” transforms the reality of impermanence from something to be feared into the ultimate source of liberation. It is not a lament on aging, but a celebration of waking up.

The word Anannatha, a Pāḷi term (Sanskrit: ananyathā) that literally translates to “not otherwise,” “not otherwise changeable,” or “true as it really is”. It describes something that is invariable, unerring, or fundamentally unalterable. It is used as a catchy hook for this song.

Lyrics

[VERSE 1]
Black as a raven, my hair in the light
Hours in the mirror every Saturday night
Pins and perfume, lacquer and lace
Learning to smile with a painted face

Laced up so tight I could barely breathe
Walking on knives just to be seen
Powder and lipstick on my skin
Starving just to fit within

But flowers fade, ornaments rust
Every mirror turns to dust

[PRE-CHORUS]
Hear the drum from the burial ground
Cut through the lies, let them fall down
This body bends, this body breaks
Truth remains when beauty fades

[CHORUS]
Anaññathā… ah-ah-ah
Nothing ever lasts
No more chains around my heart
Let the mirror fall apart
I am more than skin and bone
More than anything I own

Anaññathā… ah-ah-ah
Nothing ever lasts
Let the old illusion fade
There is freedom unafraid
Bright the mind, awake at last
Nothing true was built to last

[VERSE 2]
My eyes once burned like sapphire flame
Now they soften just the same
Hands once worshipped, smooth and fine
Will someday wrinkle over time

Botox prayers and beauty queens
Selling youth through magazines
Toxic colors, costly names
Just to stay inside the game

But I refuse to fear the years
Impermanence dissolves the fear

[PRE-CHORUS]
Hear the laughter in the flame
No one leaves this world unchanged
Cut the cord and let it go
Nothing here was ours to hold

[CHORUS]
Anaññathā… ah-ah-ah
Nothing ever lasts
No more chains around my skin
No more war I cannot win
I am more than fleeting form
More than beauty, more than storm

Anaññathā… ah-ah-ah
Nothing ever lasts
Let the old illusion fade
There is freedom unafraid
Bright the mind, steady and clear
Freedom was already here

[BRIDGE]
Cut the craving
Cut the fear
Cut the hunger
Disappear

Paint and perfume
Silk and gold
None of them can stop growing old

This body changes
Day by day
Why keep chasing what won’t stay?

[FINAL CHORUS – key change]
Anaññathā…
It cannot be otherwise
Every blossom has to fall
I was never that at all
Bright the mind and let it rise
I can see with open eyes

Anaññathā…
It cannot be otherwise
Throw away the gilded cage
I refuse to fear my age
No more begging to be seen
I am more than anything

Anaññathā… ah-ah-ah
Nothing ever lasts
Let the mirror fall apart
There is freedom in this heart

Anaññathā…
Anaññathā…
