Nagoya temple visit

The cherry blossom are still blooming and spring flowers can be found everywhere. 11th April 2024.

So first thing first, is to check out some Buddhist temple. The vibe seems to be more aligned with folk beliefs rather than serious Buddhist practices.

In this case, the temples serve as holy sanctuary where people visit to pray for various mundane wishes.

I feel a deep sense of loss because the wonderful dharma appears to be covered or lost and when people see a statue of Buddha, they can only associate it with all their unfulfilled wishes waiting for fulfilment.

In Banshoji, the priest was more interested in selling talisman related to the fox spirit 🙄

This temple is smack in a bustling touristy spot and occupies a modern building.

Spiritually, it is more about addressing the religious needs of the city folks. Fox spirits to help you get hitched takes a prominent spot in front.

Meanwhile, Kannon or avalokiteshava was placed at the back of the building and given the task of guiding the souls of aborted babies….

Now that I am writing this post and reflecting, I realise why I do not feel anything at all with my visit.

Just felt a sense of regret towards the places. But I guess some people will only connect with Buddhism in such a way. That is also Karma.

Hope their wishes will be fulfilled and may they develop interest for Dharma one day.

May all be well and happy.
